How to Add a Push-Button Switch to Your Car?

Learning how to hook up a push-button switch to a ride is an essential skill set, whether you’re a hobbyist trying to slick up your ride or a technician installing the device for a client. Here’s a walk-through guide for installing a push-button switch in your car.

What’s a push-button switch?

Before diving into the push-button switch installation process, you need to learn about push-button switches. An electrical switch that activates or deactivates with the push of a button. When the button is engaged, it helps change the state of a circuit temporarily.

When it’s disengaged, the circuit reverts to its original state. It has various uses, including in cars as starters, audio system controllers, lighting system controllers, automated driving system activators and adjustors, etc.

What tools are required for push-button installations?

If you want to install a push-button switch in your car, you will need the following tools:

  • A push-button switch
  • Electrical wires
  • A soldering kit
  • Electric drill
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver set
  • Electrical wire connectors
  • Crimping tool
  • Zip ties or electrical tape

Here are the steps to install a push-button switch in a car:

Choose switch location

Start by establishing where you want the switch. Of course, if you want convenience, place it somewhere you can reach without too much effort, usually on the dashboard. But make sure the place has enough material to hold the wiring.

Make a hole.

With the help of an electric drill, make a hole to accommodate your push-button switch. It would be helpful if you drilled with the size of the switch in mind. So don’t forget to get the size measurements first.

Disconnect the battery.

Of course, you want to work with the battery off; otherwise, you risk an electrical shock or short circuit. So, find your car battery’s negative terminal and disconnect it.

Connect the wiring

Once you’ve determined the push-button spot, measure the distance to the controlled electrical appliance. Next, prepare two pieces of wire, making them slightly longer than the measured distance. Remove a half-inch of insulation from each end of the wires.

Next, connect one of the wires to the switch’s positive terminal; you can either solder it in place or simply attach it using a crimp connector. Do the same thing on the negative terminal using the second wire.

Find the electrical wires that lead to the component you want to control.

Obviously, the component you want to control has electrical wires. You need to find the positive one and snip it, then remove a tiny amount of insulation from the ends of the two halves.

Next, connect the switch’s positive wire to one end of these halves. Do the same on the other half of the wire using the switch’s negative wire. You can solder the wires together or use crimp connectors.

Test and secure the push-button switch.

Now that you’ve set the switch in place reconnect the car battery and test your installation. Simply press the switch button to see if the electrical component turns on, then press it again to see if it turns off. Finally, secure your switch and the wires using zip ties or electrical tape.
